September 15 2000 - 75th Anniversary of Margaret Mead's visit to Hawai'i.

NOTE: From September 16 2005, this mini-sheet is no longer available. This webpage is provided for reference only.

A $5 Mini-sheet was issued on September 15th 2000 to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the visit of the famous anthropologist Margaret Mead to Hawai'i. In 1925, at the age of 23, before going to Samoa and writing her famous work "Coming of Age in Samoa", Margaret Mead spent some time studying at the Bishop Museum, Honolulu where she was appointed an Associate.

The Mini-sheet depicts two Samoan ladies from a faded photograph taken in 1925. Because the Samoan ladies are in their natural state (topless), this Mini-sheet is not for sale to minors under 18 years of age. The photograph is very relevant as the book "Coming of Age in Samoa" is a study of female sexuality in American Samoa. It caused a great stir when published as it attempted to state the premise that sexuality had cultural influences rather than just biological. Later anthropologists have attempted to debunk her theory and methods, but they are in the minority.

The $5 Mini-sheet prepays the overnight rate.
