October 11th 2001 - Centenary of the Hawai'i Yacht Club. . In 1901, Prince David Kawananakoa, Heir Apparent to the Kingdom of Hawai'i, and a group of society's elite founded the Hawai'i Yacht Club. Prince David was elected Vice-Commodore at the first meeting of the club on October 11 1901.The first clubhouse was located on the Pearl Harbor peninsula and was not easily reached by land. Later on, members started looking for a more convenient location. The Ala Wai canal and harbor were constructed in the 1930's, but it was not until 1957 that a new clubhouse was planned and built at a permanent location on the Ala Wai Harbor in Waikiki. The Club sponsors many sailing races and fishing contests around O'ahu. It instructs students on sailing and also welcomes to the Hawaiian Islands many visiting yachtsmen from around the world. The $5 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a fleet of yachts in a sailing race. The $8 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate.
