January 24th 2001 - Year of the Snake. Chinese New Year. A stamp and a mini-sheet were issued on January 24th 2001, the first day of the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Snake. The snake is the sixth animal sign in the Chinese Zodiac. Honolulu has a large Chinatown and there is a substantial percentage of the population in Hawai'i who are of Chinese descent. People born in the Year of the Snake are supposed to be deep thinkers and make good teachers or attorneys. Part of the Chinese New Year celebrations is giving children money in small red envelopes. The First Day Covers for this issue are bright red with a cachet in metallic gold ink. . . The $5 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a snake and "Year of the Snake" in Chinese. The illustration does not properly show the spot color of the text which is in metallic magenta ink. The $8 Mini-sheet (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. The Mini-sheet also shows a snake. "Happy New Year" (left) and "Year of the Snake" (right) are shown in Chinese. The illustration does not properly show the spot color of the text which is in metallic cyan ink. A booklet was also issued. This consists of the $5 stamps in a block of 4 with a white margin all around. "Hawai'i Post" is printed on the top margin. "© 2001 Hawai'i Post" is printed vertically on the lower right side margin & Hawai'i Security Printers, Honolulu, Hawai'i. is printed on the bottom margin of each pane. The cover is red with text in metallic gold ink. The back cover explains Hawai'i Post's postage rates. The booklet pane is attached to the inside of the booklet using a small strip of gum on the left margin of the booklet pane.
