August 10th 2005. Hawaiian Flowers II - Proteas.

Three stamps in a triptych and a mini-sheet were issued on August 10th 2005 which show Proteas. This is the second issue in the series of Hawaiian Flowers.

The triptych shows three Proteas grown in Hawai'i.

Proteas originated in South Africa and Australia and have been imported into Hawai'i where they can be grown on the slopes of mountains at a higher altitude. The Protea family includes not just Proteas, but also Banksias and Leucadendrons. Proteas are named after the Greek God Proteus, who attended Poseidon and could change his shape or appearance at will. Banksias are named after Joseph Banks a naturalist, and surgeon, who accompanied Captain Cook on his voyages in the Pacific Ocean, discovering the unique flowers in 1770 in Australia. The export of Proteas from Hawai'i is a thriving industry, especially on the island of Maui.

The $2 stamp in the triptych (above left) prepays extra charges, such as additional weight. It shows the "Hawai'i Gold" (Leucospermum). This is a hybrid "Pin cushion" produced by cross-pollenation at the University of Hawai'i Agricultural Experiment Station on the island of Maui. It blooms for several months from February onwards and reproduces easily. "Pin cushions" are easily hybridized and that's why there are so many varieties.

The $5 stamp in the triptych (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the Prince Protea (Protea compacta). This protea originated in South Africa. It is easily grown and is a very popular variety. It blooms from November through May.

The $8 stamp in the triptych (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the King Protea (Protea cynaroides). This is the national flower of the country of South Africa. It is a large flower with blooms up to a foot across. There are several different varieties which bloom at different times of the year.

The outer edges of the triptych are perforated (perf 12). The two vertical divisions between the 3 stamps in the triptych are rouletted (roulette 5).

The $8 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the same proteas, but in one design with no perforations or roulettes.

The special postmark for this issue shows the King Protea (Protea cynaroides).
