June 15th 2006. Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument. Three minisheets were issued on June 15th 2006 to celebrate the creation of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument. On June 15th 2006, President George W. Bush signed a proclamation that created the "Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument". The Monument will be managed by the Department of the Interiors U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Commerce Departments National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in close co-ordination with the State of Hawai'i. The Monument begins about 160 miles north of the island of Kaua'i and extends northwest for about 1,200 miles and covers about 140,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean. It consists of uninhabited (except for Midway Atoll) islands, atolls, coral reefs, shoals and shallow seabanks. About 7,000 marine species make this place their home, 25% of which are not found anywhere else on the planet. One of these is the Monk Seal (on the $5 minisheet, below right) which is an endangered species. . . . The $3 minisheet (above left) prepays extra charges, such as additional weight. It shows the Green Sea Turtle found in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The $5 minisheet (above right) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a Monk Seal which is native to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It is on the endangered species list. The $8 minisheet (top of the page) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a map of the Pacific Ocean depicting the extent of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument. The special postmark for this issue depicts a Moorish Idol fish commonly found on the reefs of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Black ink was used. WE ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS ON ALL ORDERS
