May 8th 2010. Hawaiian Flowers III - Ginger.

Three stamps in a triptych and a mini-sheet were issued on May 8th 2010 which show Ginger flowers. This is the third issue in the series of Hawaiian Flowers.

The triptych shows three different Ginger flowers grown in Hawai'i. The Ginger family (Zingiberaceae) is a family of flowering plants with aromatic perennial herbs and tuberous rhizomes, most of them originating in Asia. They were brought to Hawai’i by early European settlers.

The $2.50 stamp in the triptych (above left) prepays extra charges, such as additional weight. It depicts Red Ginger (Alpinia purpurata) which is native to Malaysia and has showy flowers on long brightly colored red bracts. Red Ginger grows best in partial shade and moist humid conditions.

The $6 stamp in the triptych (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate. It depicts the Beehive Ginger (Zingiber spectabile) which can grow as high as 6 feet tall and has yellowish bracts which become red when mature. They bloom from July through November. It has a strong ginger fragrance and is a very showy plant.

The $9 stamp in the triptych (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It depicts the Kahili Ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) or Ginger Lily is from the Himalayas in India. It has colorful groups of pale yellow flowers. This is the most widely distributed ginger but it is considered a weed in Hawai’i because of its ability to spread and smother other plants.

The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It depicts a group of Beehive Ginger (Zingiber spectabile).

A booklet (above) was also issued. It contains 2 triptych booklet panes. The front cover depicts the Ginger flowers stamps in a triptych.

The special postmark for this issue shows the White Ginger flower (Hedychium coronarium). Hawaiians call this Awapuhi. It has a strong but pleasant scent. It is widely used for making white leis which are very popular at Hawaiian weddings.
