February 14th 2010. Lunar New Year - the Year of the Tiger. Two stamps and a minisheet were issued on February 14th 2010 to celebrate the first day of the Lunar New Year, The Year of the Tiger. The Year of the Tiger began on February 14th 2010 and ends on February 2nd 2011.This year, the first day of the Lunar New Year also fell on Saint Valentine's Day. The tiger is the third of 12 animal signs in the Chinese Zodiac. It is a sign of power and courage. In Imperial China, the dragon was the emblem of the emperors, but the tiger was the emblem of the Army generals symbolizing fearlessness and victory. People born under this sign are courageous, powerful and passionate and will likely benefit from luck or good fortune during this year. Wishing you and your family a year of prosperity and good health in 2010. Gung Hay Fat Choy! The $6 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a tiger in the resting position. The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a close-up of the face of a tiger. The $9 minisheet (above) shows a hand-colored 1796 illustration of a poem by the English poet William Blake which was first published in 1794 and titled "The Tyger". It is a very famous poem that is commonly taught to schoolchildren in English speaking countries the world over. It begins "Tyger Tyger burning bright in the forests of the night...."
