December 6th 2011. Hawai'i's Renewable Energy Sources. Two stamps and a minisheet were issued on December 6th 2011 depicting Hawai'i 's renewable energy sources. Currently, the Hawaiian Electric Company relies almost entirely on oil-fired Power Plants to produce electricity for the state of Hawaii. With the increasing cost of foreign oil, alternative energy sources are being looked into. Renewable energy sources are being actively promoted in Hawaii. This includes Wind, Solar, Ocean Tidal and Geothermal sources. The one renewable energy source that is most promising is Geothermal because this has been tried and tested in other countries which have active volcanos, such as Iceland. Many wind and solar projects have started up. But Geothermal could make Hawaii totally independent of foreign oil imports. The cost to build these Power Plants is high, but since the sources are constantly renewable, they are very cost effective in the long run.
The $6 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a group of 12 solar panels, angled to face the sun. The $9 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a large number of wind turbines which comprise a wind farm.
The $9 minisheet (above) shows a stylized view of the workings of a proposed Geothermal Power Plant on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
The special postmark for this issue (above) shows a cluster of three wind turbines. WE ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS ON ALL ORDERS
