October 14th 2011. Butterflies II. Three stamps, a minisheet and a booklet were issued on October 14th 2011 depicting butterflies. This is the second in a series of butterflies. The first series of butterflies can be found here. The $2.50 stamp (above left) prepays additional charges such as extra weight. It shows the Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) butterfly of the Papilionidae family. This pretty butterfly is found all across the Northern hemisphere and is quite common. The $6 stamp (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the Blue Mountain (Papilio ulysses) butterfly which is also from the Papilionidae family. This large butterfly is endemic to Australia, New Guinea and other Pacific islands. It has a wingspan of about five to six inches. The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the Chestnut Tiger (Parantica sita) butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found across Asia from Pakistan to Japan. The $9 minisheet (above) shows the lifecycle of a butterfly. Each butterfly starts out as an egg which is usually laid on leaves, then a caterpillar, then a pupa before becoming a fully fledged butterfly. The Monarch butterfly is shown in the final stage. The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts a butterfly of the Papilionidae family in the center. The stamp booklet for this issue (above) depicts a Monarch butterfly on the cover.
