June 21st 2011. Hawaiian Lei Flowers. Three stamps and a minisheet were issued on June 21st 2011 depicting Hawaiian lei flowers. The $2.50 stamp (above left) pays for extra charges, such as additional weight. It shows the lei flower Ponimo'i. Also known as the Carnation. Shown is a red and white hybrid. This colorful flower was originally brought to Hawaii in the mid-1800s by the Missionaries. It blooms year round and is a very fragrant and a popular lei flower. A standard Ponimoi lei requires about 70 or more blossoms. The $6 stamp (above center) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the lei flower "Ilima. This flower is indigenous to Hawaii. Leis using the Ilima flowers were traditionally made for Hawaiian royalty. These flowers are very thin and small, measuring about one inch in diameter. Hundreds of them are required to make a standard lei. The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate.It shows the lei flower Pua Melia. Also known as Plumeria. Shown is the common white Pua Melia. This flower was originally brought to Hawaii in the early 1800s. It is the most popular of all lei flowers. This is because Pua Melia blossoms are found all over the islands and also because it has a very strong and attractive fragrance. Pua Melia comes in various colors and over 50 blossoms are required to make a standard lei.. The $9 minisheet (above) shows flower and lei sellers in Honolulu in the early 1900's. The picture is from an old Hawaiian postcard.
The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts three Pua melia flowers across the center. A booklet was also issued. Each booklet contains three booklet panes, consisting of 2 x $2.50, 2 x $6 and 2 x $9 postage stamps. The front cover shows a lei with different colored flowers. WE ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS ON ALL ORDERS
