September 6th 2012. Hawaiian Exports.

Three stamps and a minisheet were issued on September 6th 2012 depicting Hawaiian exports.

In the twentieth century, the principal exports from Hawai’i were sugar cane and pineapples. This has dwindled because of the high cost of Hawai’i land which makes it cheaper to grow them elsewhere. Jet air cargo, starting in the late 1950s, allowed perishable items such as freshly cut tropical flowers ($9 stamp) to be exported.

Today the main Hawaiian exports are familiar items such as Macadamia nuts, Kona coffee ($3 stamp) and Aloha shirts ($9 minisheet), but also less familar ones such as University graduates ($6 stamp), smart concrete, and biotechnology products. Exports are transported by container ship (see FDC cachet) and air cargo jets between Hawai’i and the mainland, or the Far East and Australia.

The $3 stamp (above left) pays for the dufference between the overnight rate and the same day rate. It shows two anthurium flowers. These flowers symbolize the Hawaiian exports of tropical flowers.

The $6 stamp (above center) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the students tossing their graduation hats into the air. This symbolizes the many thousands of students from the mainland and overseas who come to Hawai'i to study at college and then go home with a degree from a Hawaiian University.

The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate.It shows bag of Kona coffee with a pile of coffee bans in front. This is a rapidly growing Hawaiian export as Kona coffee is recognized as a high quality coffee throughout the world.

The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows two Aloha shirts in different designs. Although many aloha shirts are made outside Hawai'i, many are sewn together in Hawai'i and proud to state "Made in Hawai'i" on their labels.

The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts a fork-lift truck lifting a wooden crate for export.
