March 14th 2012. Hawaiian Shells II. Three stamps in a triptych and a mini-sheet were issued on March 14th 2012 depicting Hawaiian shells. The $3 stamp in the triptych (above left) prepays extra charges, such as additional weight. It shows the .Hairy Triton shell. Cymatium pileare. This striped shell is found near coral reefs. It is spiraled leading to a point. The Polynesians used it as a horn, as did Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. The $6 stamp in the triptych (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the Sea Urchin. Echinoidea. These are commonly found in tidal pools or sands in shallow coastal waters around the Hawaiian Islands. They come in many sizes and colors. The $9 stamp in the triptych (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the Venus Comb Murex. Murex pecten. This ivory white shell has many spines sticking out which are used as protection against its many predators. However, this restricts its movement on the ocean floor. The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the same Hawaiian Shells, but in one design with no perforations. The background has been changed to a gradient from navy blue to myrtle green. The text reads "Hawaiian Shells II" in an orange colored enclosure. The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts a nautilus shell. WE ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS ON ALL ORDERS
