July 6th 2013. Parrots. Three stamps and a minisheet were issued on July 6th 2013 depicting parrots. The $2.50 stamp (above left) prepays additional charges such as extra weight. It shows an Adelaide Rosella (Platycercus elegans). This is a hybrid parrot found mostly in Southeastern Australia in mountainous areas and gardens. An adult is about 14 inches tall. They nest in tree trunks and feed on fruit, seeds, berries and insects. The $6 stamp (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna). Endemic to South America, this parrot is a very popular pet not just because of its colors, but also its striking facial markings, and its talking ability. They bond well with their owners and feed on nuts and fruits. The head of this parrot is also shown on the booklet cover (below). The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a Red-Headed Macaw (Ara erythrocephala). This parrot was once found in the mountains of the Caribbean island of Jamaica, but it is now extinct. It was a close relative of the Cuban macaw and the Dominican macaw. The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It depicts a pair of very colorful Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao). They are endemic to tropical evergreen forests of South America. They are always a delight to see because of their very colorful plumage. The booklet cover for this issue (above) depicts the head of a Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna). The booklet contains 2 x $2.50, 2 x $6 and 2 x $9 stamps in panes of two.
