July 27th 2013. Korean War 60th Anniversary. Two stamps and a minisheet were issued on July 27th 2013 in memory of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. The Korean War (1950-53) began when the North Korean Communist army invaded South Korea. Armed with Soviet tanks, they quickly overran South Korea, but the USA came to the rescue with General Douglas MacArthur commanding the US forces. After beating back the Chinese communists who had intervened, McArthur was relieved of his command for disobeying orders. General Ridgway took over and held off the Communists along the 38th parallel until an armistice was signed on July 27th 1953. The Korean War memorial in the state of Hawaii is located on the grounds of the Hawai'i State Capitol. It consists of a serpentine wall that is six feet high and nearly fifty feet long, made of polished black granite, and topped with a lava rock wall. The memorial is made up of hundreds of diamond-shaped pedestals engraved with the names of service men and women from Hawai'i who died during the Korean war. In remembrance, small leis are often laid surrounding the names on the top of the pedestals. The $6 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a close up of the Korean War Memorial in Honolulu. The inset photo shows General Douglas MacArthur. The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a map of the divided Korean peninsula. The inset photo shows General Mathew Ridgway. The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It depicts part of the Korean War Memorial in Honolulu. Inset is a map of the divided Korean peninsula. The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts a map of the divided Korean peninsula.
