January 6th 2014. Hawai'i Shipwrecks. Two stamps and a minisheet were issued on January 6th 2014 depicting Hawai'i shipwrecks. There have been many shipwrecks in Hawai'i over the years, but very few are accessible. Most have been cleared away so as not to damage the fragile ecological system. This issue depicts three of the shipwrecks that still remain. The $6 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the wreck of the USS Utah which was bombed by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941. Part of the wreck can still be seen above the waterline off the northwest coast of Ford Island. The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a skin diver above the wreckage of an Oshima class Asian fishing vessel, circa 1910. Parts of this ship were found in shallow water scattered along a reef in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. Photo by NOAA. The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It depicts a shipwreck on Kaiolohia Beach (aka Shipwreck Beach), Lanai. In the lower left corner is a sign near the same beach which has been carved into a rock saying "SHIPWRECK BEACH'. Not much is known about the wreck other than it was a WWII ferrous-concrete ship that ran aground there and was abandoned. It is a big tourist attraction on the Hawaiian island of Lanai. The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts a shipwreck of a sailing ship with torn masts. WE ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS ON ALL ORDERS
