October 5th 2005 - Hurricane Relief.

Two semi-postal stamps were issued on October 5th 2005 for Hurricane Relief. This is the first semi-postal issue of Hawai'i Post.

The eye of the hurricane crossed the south coast. Estimated maximum sustained winds over land were 140 mph with gusts to 175 mph. Damage was extensive. The damage from the surge of the ocean was heaviest along the south shore and affected shoreline hotels, homes and condominiums. Wind damage was extremely heavy and many homes and buildings were flattened or lost their roofs. According to Red Cross figures, the hurricane left over 14,000 homes damaged or destroyed. Electric power and telephone service were lost throughout the area and only 20 percent of electricity had been restored a month after the storm. Crop damage was very extensive, and many trees were broken or uprooted. The damage caused by the hurricane was estimated in the billions of dollars. Six people died and over one hundred were injured.

Sound familiar ? Hurricane Katrina ? Hurricane Rita ? No, the above description refers to Hurricane Iniki which hit the island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands on September 11 1992. Hawai'i is no stranger to hurricanes, so we have great sympathy for those who suffered in Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in the Gulf Coast area, and especially New Orleans.

Hawai'i Post decided to do it's share to help by issuing two semi-postal stamps. 100% of the surcharges on the stamps will be sent to the American Red Cross to aid in Hurricane Relief. The first check will be sent out soon after the release of the stamps.

The $5 + $1.25 stamp (top left) prepays the Overnight rate plus the Hurricane Relief surcharge. It shows the NOAA image of Hurricane Iniki as the eye of the storm went over Waimea Kauai on September 11 1992. An outline of Kauai, Niihau and the rest of the Hawaiian Islands has been superimposed on the image by NOAA.

The $8 + $1.75 stamp (top right) prepays the Same Day rate plus the Hurricane Relief surcharge. It shows the colorized NOAA image of Hurricane Katrina as the eye of the storm went over New Orleans, Louisiana on August 29 2005. An outline of the Gulf Coast area has been superimposed on the image by NOAA.

The images of the hurricanes on the stamps are courtesy of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The postmark (above) for this issue shows the words "Hurricane Relief" etc. in a hurricane-like twirl, with an "eye" in the center. The town chosen was Waimea, Kauai where Hurricane Iniki came ashore in 1992.

In November 2005, the first check for $200.00 was made out to the American Red Cross for funds raised so far, from the sale of this stamp issue. See thank you letter below from the American Red Cross.
