October 15th 2006. Big Island Earthquake.

Three semi-postal stamps in a triptych and a mini-sheet were issued on October 15th 2006 to mark the strongest earthquake to hit the state of Hawai'i in 25 years.

Hawaiians were rudely awakened at 7:08am on Sunday October 15th when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Hawaiian Islands. About 10 minutes later, another 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit. This was followed by hundreds of aftershocks. The epicenter was about 11miles west-southwest of Waikoloa on the Big Island, at a depth of about 24 miles. Electricity was shut down on all the islands as a precaution. It was not fully restored until 2 days later, although many places were restored within 24 hours.

Fortunately, there were no major injuries or fatalities. High rises swayed in Waikiki and Honolulu, but no major damage was reported. However, there was a fair amount of damage to buildings on the west coast of the Big Island. There, boulders came tumbling down onto the highways and road crews quickly got into action to clear the debris. Many coastal roads had cracks in their surface. A hospital and a church showed the most damage. Patients had to be evacuated from the hospital.

The $2 + 50c stamp (above left) prepays extra charges, such as additional weight. It shows a man straddling a crack in a road caused by an earthquake.

The $5 + $1 stamp (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate.It shows a map of the Big Island and the epicenter of the earthquake with shock waves emanating from it.

The $8 + $1.50 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the damage done to the Kalahikiola Church at Kapa'au on the Big Island.

The $8 + $1.50 mini-sheet (above) shows the seismograph reading of the earthquake against a backdrop of the outline of the Big Island.

The surcharges (from 50c to $1.50) on each stamp will go to aid the reconstruction of public buildings on the Big Island.

An Official Hawai'i Post First Day Cover was also issued with a special cachet and postmark for the occasion.

The special postmark for this issue (above) shows the staggered letters "EARTH QUAKE" with a crack through the circle.
