May 16th 2011. Bridges of Hawai'i.

Two stamps and a minisheet were issued on May 16th 2011 depicting the bridges of Hawai'i.

The effect of constant rain on the mountains in Hawai'i produces many streams which flow into rivers, that eventually run into the Pacific Ocean. These streams and rivers require many bridges to cross them. Some bridges that have been built are plain and functional, while others can be quite ornate. An example of the former is the McCully Street bridge, which is depicted on the $9 stamp (above right). An example of the latter is a pedestrian bridge in Ala Moana Beach Park, which is depicted on the $9 minisheet (below). In between these two kinds of design is the Kalakaua Avenue bridge which is depicted on the $6 stamp (above left). Its sweeping arches provide a simple but effective design.

The Ala Wai canal surrounds Waikiki on two sides. There are three bridges into Waikiki which go across the Ala Wai canal. The third one (not depicted) is the Ala Moana Boulevard bridge. These four--lane bridges provide vital arteries of traffic to and from Waikiki.

If you like walking, one of the best walks in Waikiki is along the Ala Wai canal taking in the sights along the way, including the bridges.

The $6 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the Kalakaua Avenue bridge over the Ala Wai Canal, looking mauka (towards the mountains).

The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the McCully Street bridge over the Ala Wai Canal, looking east. You can see the flat back of Diamond Head in the distance.

The $9 minisheet (above) shows a view of a pedestrian bridge in Ala Moana Beach Park, looking makai (towards the Pacific Ocean). The bridge crosses a stream which connects a series of lagoons in the park.

The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts an outline of a pedestrian bridge in Ala Moana Beach Park, also shown on the minisheet.
