January 3rd 2013. Senator Daniel Inouye 1924-2012.

Three stamps and a minisheet were issued on January 3rd 2013 in memory of Senator Daniel Inouye 1924-2012.

Daniel Inouye was born on September 7, 1924, the son of Japanese parents who lived in Mo'iliili division of Honolulu, Hawai’i. Growing up, his ambition was to be a surgeon and he started out by teaching First Aid at the Red Cross. On December 7, 1941 he was called to attend to the wounded after the Japanese Air Raid at Pearl Harbor where he spent 5 days treating the U.S. military injured in the attack.

In 1943, he volunteered for the U.S. Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team which was composed of Japanese Americans willing to fight on the European front. The initial call was for a thousand troops, but 10,000 volunteers showed up. Impressed, the U.S. Army upped the number to 2,500 who were given a big send off at 'Iolani Palace on March 28, 1943 (see $6 stamp). After Inouye's initial training at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he fought in Europe. First in France and then Italy. He made Sergeant the first year, then later a Lieutenant (see ($3 stamp).

In a fierce battle to take a ridge at San Terenzo, Italy (see FDC) he lost an arm to an exploding grenade thrown by an enemy soldier. Undeterred, he completed his military service in 1947 as a Captain, and then went on to win a seat in the Territorial Congress in 1953. After Hawai'i became a U.S. state in 1959, Inouye was the first U.S. Congressman to be elected representing the state of Hawai'i. In 1962 he won a seat in the U.S. Senate where he served for 49 years until his death. He never lost an election.

He died on December 17, 2012 at the age of 88 and is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. He was a great American hero.

The $3 stamp (above left) pays for the dufference between the overnight rate and the same day rate. It shows Lt. Daniel Inouye in uniform in World War II. At the top left is the 442nd's patch.

The $11.50 stamp (above center) prepays the 1.5 kilogram Same Day rate. It shows an official portrait of Daniel Inouye as a U.S. Senator.

This memorial is located in Fort DeRussy near the corner of Saratoga Road and Kalakaua Avenue, Waikiki. It honors the World War II veterans who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Inouye's unit), the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion and the Military Intelligence Service.
