April 8th 2013. Waikiki Architecture.

Two stamps and a minisheet were issued on April 8th 2013 which depict Waikiki architecture.

The $6 stamp (above left) prepays the Overnight rate.. It shows the Waikiki Galleria Tower. It is a very distinctive high-rise commercial building on Kalakaua Avenue, at the corner of Lewers Street in the center of Waikiki..It is currently owned by Japanese investors. Many years ago, the first two floors were occupied by the Woolworth department store, until they went out of business.

The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the Waikiki Landmark condominium at the entrance to Waikiki. It is located between Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard. This building is well known for its "hole" in the middle. Mired in legal battles after it was built, the building stood vacant for many years. Now that it is occupied, the building has had continuous problems leasing the many ground floor stores, due to its location at the very end of Waikiki, and the lack of nearby street parking.

The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the Hawai'i Convention Center. It cost $200 million to build and was completed in 1997, and opened in 1998. It offers 1,000,000 square feet of floor space. It is a spectacular piece of architecture and is located on Kalakaua Avenue, at the corner of Atkinson Street. On one side, it borders on the Ala Wai canal. The beautiful landscaping around it accentuates the building. The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) has voted it as the most beautiful convention center in the world.

The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts the Top of Waikiki revolving restaurant. It is located on Kalakaua Avenue and Seaside Avenue in the center of Waikiki.
