March 1st 2014. Birds.

The $3 stamp (above left) pays for the difference between the Overnight rate and the Same Day rate. It shows a male and female Red-cheeked Blue Waxbill Uraeginthus bengalus. It is a small finch with a high-pitched voice and is found across a wide range of Africa. It has also been introduced to Hawai'i. The nest is a large round oval-shaped grass structure with a side entrance, as shown on the stamp. Four or five eggs are usually laid.

The $6 stamp (above middle) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows a Saffron Finch Sicalis flaveola. This tanager is found in open areas in South America. It nests in tree cavities and in the eaves of houses. It is a human friendly bird and is often kept as a pet in a cage.

The $9 stamp (above right) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows a Red-headed Weaver Anaplectes rubriceps. It is a seed-eating bird found throughout tropical Africa. Usually only seen alone or in pairs. It builds a nest of grasses in trees, which vary in size, shape and construction.

The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It depicts the male and female St. Helena Waxbird Estrilda astrilda. It is found in sub-sahara Africa and islands around Africa, hence the name. It is a small bird up to 5 inches in length. They feed on grass seeds and sometimes insects. They have a similar nest to the Red-cheeked Blue Waxbill ($3 stamp), but the entrance points downwards.

The booklet cover for this issue (above) depicts a St. Helena Wirebird Charadrius sanctaehelenae which is only found on the island of St. Helena, a British colony, and nowhere else in the world. It is a critically endangered species with only about 300 birds known. It prefers open areas and builds its nest on the ground which unfortunately leaves the eggs prey to feral cats and rats. It is the national bird of St. Helena appearing on its flag, coat of arms, coins and stamps. The bird is protected and monitored by local conservation groups.

The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts a swan.
