The Year 2003 First Day Covers issued by HAWAI'I POST®January 20 2003 A First Day Cover was issued on January 20 2003 with a special cachet and a postmark (Waimea, Kaua'i). Covers were made in white and gray. The special cachet shows a Hawaiian Chief and a wahine as drawn by John Webber who accompanied Captain Cook on his voyage in 1778. The text has a short history of Captain Cook and his arrival in Hawai'i. The special postmark for the above cover was issued for January 20 2003 only. The outer circle reads "225th ANNIV. CAPTAIN COOK'S ARRIVAL IN HAWAI'I * WAIMEA, KAUA'I*". The center lines across read "1778 2003 / JANUARY 20" with a ship's sextant, similar to that used by Captain Cook for navigation, in the upper center. "HAWAI'I POST" in the lower center. A First Day Cover was issued on February 1 2003 with a special cachet and a postmark. Covers were made in white and gray. The special cachet shows a ram on a mountainside. The special postmark for the above cover was issued for February 1 2003 only. The outer circle reads "YEAR OF THE RAM". The center lines across read "FEBRUARY 1 2003" with the symbol for the zodiac sign Aries (the ram), in the upper center. "HAWAI'I POST, CHINATOWN, O'AHU" in the lower center. The special cachet shows the Honolulu Railroad Depot. The text has a short history of Railroads in Hawai'i. The special postmark for the above covers was issued for April 6 2003 only. The outer circle reads "EWA RAILROAD STATION". The lower inner circle reads "APRIL 6 2003" with a railroad crossing signal in the upper center. "HAWAI'I POST" in the lower part of the circle. The special cachet shows a photo of Father Damien shortly before he died of complications caused by leprosy. The special postmark for the above cover was issued for May 10 2003 only. Purple ink was used for the postmark. The outer circle reads "MAY 10 2003 * HAWAI'I POST". The lower circle reads "KALAUPAPA, MOLOKA'I" with a depiction in the center of the bronze statue of Father Damien by artist Marisol Escobar that stands in front of the State Capitol Building in downtown Honolulu. The special cachet shows a photo of the "Helios" and the history of the aircraft leading up to its crash. The regular date cancel was used. The special cachet shows a small photo of each butterfly or moth depicted on the stamp plus a short description. The special postmark for the above cover was issued for July 29 2003 only. The outer circle reads "*BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS * ". The lower circle reads "HAWAI'I POST, WAIKIKI, O'AHU". Above this is the date "JULY 29 2003". A depiction of a butterfly is in the center . The special cachet shows a map of the Hawaiian islands with the island of Kaho'olawe circled in red. The text contains a short history of the island. The special postmark for the above cover was issued for November 11 2003 only. The outer circle reads "*RETURN OF KAHO'OLAWE TO THE STATE OF HAWAI'I* ". The lower circle reads "HONOKANAI'A". The inner lower circle reads "HAWAI'I POST" with the date above "NOV. 11 2003". An outline map of Kaho'olawe is shown in the center.
